A few things to know.
What can I do with Sidewalk?+
Chat live with other people. Join Global or the current public website’s room to share messages with other people. Replies, profile blocking, and private reports are available. Adult-site rooms are unavailable. Adult websites are excluded from discovery and page sharing. The website and extension both use real rooms; there are no sample conversations.
How do streaks and points work?+
Earn 5 points per eligible message, up to 100 each day. Consecutive days with earned points build your streak. Duplicate and rapid-fire posts don’t add points. Progress stays with your local profile when you change your emoji. Scores do not sync across devices.
Who can use sidewalk?+
You must confirm you are at least 13 before using chat. Adult-site rooms are unavailable. Adult websites are excluded from discovery and page sharing. This is self-confirmation, not age verification. Domain lists can miss adult pages, particularly on mixed-use websites. Strong-profanity censoring is on by default and can be changed in settings; mild words stay visible.
Do I need an account?+
No email or password is needed. Sidewalk creates a pseudonymous chat account automatically. Your identity combines a background color and an emoji, like Red Car or Yellow Smiley. Choose your color and emoji, or tap Surprise me for a fresh alias. Your unique profile number stays visible when you change aliases. It stays on your device and is shared across the sidebar, detached window, and dropdown.
Can it match my device’s dark mode?+
Yes. Follow device appearance switches automatically between Cloud and Night walk. Or choose a fixed palette: eight palettes, including Ocean, Sunset, Rose garden and Slate. Settings also lets you choose the sidebar, dropdown, or movable window.
What can the extension access?+
It uses Chrome’s storage, side panel, and tabs permissions to identify the active website while Sidewalk is open. After the welcome agreement, chat connects automatically while open and it connects to our chat backend and sends the selected room, your alias, and messages you post. Live page sharing is off by default. If you enable it, messages can include page titles and sanitized clickable paths from public websites classified as non-adult, as shown in your sharing preview. Adult and disabled websites cannot be shared. Filters can make mistakes; check the preview before sending. Analytics use aggregate chat counts. Optional opening measurements are off until enabled in Settings and include only day, mode and version. Individual browsing histories are not collected for analytics. It does not request access to every website in the background.
Is it on the Chrome Web Store?+
Yes. Install Sidewalk from the Chrome Web Store. Chrome delivers published updates automatically. The extension is for desktop Chrome; you can also try web chat without installing it.
